The Laundry Drama
Moms, I feel for you and I have been where you are now. The laundry, oh my gosh, as if there wasn’t enough to do, and now with the kids, it’s an ever ending battle, getting all those clothes folded and put away. First, let me give you a big hug and say it will get better, believe me. Second, let’s see what’s not working anymore, ok? Things do change alot, once kids enter the equation and what worked then may not work now.
Here’s my story:
Saturday was my usual laundry day because it was my one free day I had for household chores. It worked great. A few loads of clothes and one load of linens. They would be washed, dried, folded and put away before lunch. Ready for the week ahead. Doing laundry on “laundry day” was the perfect solution for me then.
Fast forward and enter the kids. Laundry day was still Saturday and I was still gathering up all the laundry and linens as I always did, trying to get through the numerous loads. Here’s where my story goes sideways. Instead of having all the clothes washed, dried, folded and put away by noon, or even dinner time (heck they weren’t getting folded by the next day), I had a load of clothes sitting in the washer (getting that funky musty smell), a load in the dryer, another load on top of the dryer and a couple loads laying on the couch getting wrinkled because I hadn’t folded them yet (and the kids jumping in them didn’t help either).
Getting the clothes washed and dried was never the issue, the issue was getting the clothes folded and put away. The mountain of clothes would grow and I would get some of it folded but by the next Saturday, I still had laundry from the last Saturday to do. Everyone was digging through the pile of laundry on the couch for something clean to wear!!
Does this sound familiar to you?
The Smart Laundry Method
I got tired of having to root through piles of unfolded clothes for clean outfits for the kids and the mess was driving me crazy. So what I did was stopped everything and folded every little piece of clothing sitting on my couch and I put them away. That felt pretty darn good but there was a ton of other tasks not finished. I knew there had to be an easier way to do laundry.
While laying in bed that night, I had a breakthrough. A total lightbulb moment! I realized why my laundry was so out of control and no, it’s not because I have kids, it’s because I am trying to do things the same way I did back when it was laundry for two. Kids do change your life, for the better I would say, but they also change your work load and the way you manage it.Say goodbye to 'laundry day' and hello to doing laundry the smart way! Very determined, the next morning (which wasn’t laundry day), I gathered up all the laundry and I had enough clothes for one load of clothes, so I threw them into the washer. While they washed, I did other tasks and when they were done, I dried them and then I folded them immediately and put them away. Again, the following morning I had another load ready and waiting, so I repeated the same steps as the day before. Once again the laundry was folded and put away, immediately. On the third day, guess what? That’s right, I did another load of laundry, from start to finish. In fact, every single day I did laundry, sometimes it was one load and sometimes it was more, but I completely finished it.
There’s no more laundry day at my house, everyday is laundry day.
Doing laundry every single day gives you freedom from the overload of clothes sitting in baskets or on your couch, getting wrinkled, never reaching their final destination of being put away. This method works for me and my family with four children, I really hope it works for you too.
Laundry tip: some of us have been raised to sort our laundry (yes, that’s me) but I have found an easier way so you don’t have to sort them, at all! It works fine for me, it may work for you too. If you are washing clothes that you think the colours may run together, add a half cup of vinegar to the wash and you won’t have this problem, ever.
If you have any questions or comments about how I use this smart method of doing laundry, I would love to hear them.
