You can take these tips to the bank! Boosting your kid’s immune system is super easy to do and the solution is in your fridge right now.
One week into school and my daughter is already coughing and sneezing. I often wonder why, as soon as school starts, so do runny noses and coughs. I know the kids are more exposed to germs once they are in the class room but it’s just happens so fast!
My dad always said if you are succuming to every little bug, then your immune system needs a boost and he was right.
Did you know that our immune system is in our small intestine? Funny, but it is. So this is where we need to start when we want to build a strong immunity.
Before we talk about all the good stuff we can give the kids for boosting their good gut bateria (so they have a strong immune system), lets look at why their gut bacteria may be damaged to start with:
- they’ve taken antibiotics
- over consumption of sugar and white flour products
- over the counter products (mouthwash, asprin, antacids and laxitives)
- widespread use of antibacterials
- artificial food colouring
There’s more about this subject, but I just wanted to give you a quick idea of why your littles (or biggies) need a good dose of probiotics. Most of us can check off at least one of the above, right? Therefore, everyone needs to work on a healthy gut.
Lets talk about how we can improve our kids chance of staying healthy this year:
First step is getting our kids to wash their hands! After playing with other kids, touching classroom surfaces and the outdoor play equipment (oh yes, don’t forget the bus), teach them to head to the bathroom to wash up. It seems like that isn’t a part of the many kids routines, anymore. Especially before they eat, they really need to wash their hands.
The next thing we have to do, as parents, is put the clampers on all the sugar (including white flour products) they may be consuming. Our kids are consuming way too much refined sugar. It causes bad bacteria (candida) in the child’s gut and then it interferes with absorption of the nutrients in their food. You can find a lot of good ideas for treats and desserts, without the added sugar, like this pumpkin muffin recipe, oatmeal peanut butter bites recipe and frozen watermelon dessert.
The reason I mentioned sugar out of all the other gut bacteria damagers is because it’s right up there on the list of products that kids consume and contribute to poor health.
Finally, introduce foods that will nuritious and heal their intestines, thereby letting them absorb their nutrients. This will help them build a stronger immune system.
Food such as:
- plain yogurt (Greek has more protein, no sugar)
- traditional buttermilk (not the cultured)
- some cheeses (read the label)
- bone broth
- probiotic supplements (read labels and make sure they are live)
Getting the kids to eat some of these foods isn’t going to be easy but give them the opportunity. This summer I introduced my daughter to kombucha (a fermented green tea drink) and she loved it! I coudn;t believe it and now she drinks one a week.
Try adding sliced pickles to their lunch or dinner, most kids love them. I’ve been raised with pickles being put on the table at every dinner, maybe my mom was onto something 😉
Money Saving Tip: when you are shopping for something new to get the kids to try, wait until you see it on sale and then grab one. Don’t buy a case or carton full, just a single serving for them to try.
Although, I can’t promise that your kids will never get sick, you will see a decline in the number of colds they will contract. Strong, healthy bodies are more able to fight off what comes after them.
